German Short Term Market Simulation (CCGT)

Originally developed in Conjunction with Statkraft Markets GmbH the simulation models a CCGT operating in the short term markets.

Key Learning Points:

  1. CCGT commercial characteristics
  2. Minute reserve market
  3. Day ahead Auction
  4. Intra-Day Market
  5. Real time dispatch
  6. Real Time issues
  7. IntrdayS market

The detailed simulation gives a realistic insight to operating a CCGT asset the day ahead, intra-day and day after German electricity market.

Scenarios place the user under realistic time pressures where they are forced to make financial decisions. Scenarios also place the user in different situations for example:

  • Price volatility
  • Asset failures

The intra-day trading screen, where the user has 1 minute per trading period (1 hour trading periods) to seek out opportunities to optimise their position. Weather data (bottom right hand corner) will continually be updated.

The generation plan screen. This is where the user can schedule the plant to run in 2+1, 1+1 or 1+0 mode and at the desired level of output.

During the workshop the users have an opportunity to submit a Dummy bid to the EEX auctions. They will use real time online weather Data provided by Montel and compare their bid against the actual out-turn for the auction.

Scenario 1: Welcome & Introduction (1h 45 minutes)

  • Workshop Overview
  • Market introduction
  • Understanding the software:
Run through simulation without any time constraints. Detailed explanation of each screen

Scenario 2: Buy and sell transactions (1h 30 minutes)

  • Simulation runs with time constraints
  • Day Ahead – Intra Day – Day After Process – All run with time constraints
  • Focus: Price Prognosis, Auction submission, Plant optimisation, Buy and sell transactions for optimisation, Price Movement, OTC option
  • Discussion – Feedback from scenario

Lunch Break (1h)

Scenario 3: Plant trip (1h 15 minutes)

  • Simulation runs with time constraints
  • Extending from scenario 2 and adding real time issues
